TRY A DIFFERENT BROWSER!
TRY A DIFFERENT BROWER (AT LEAST IT WORKED ON A MAC)
I'm not in an area with wi-fi and needed to transfer some pics from my mac to my ipad. Set up an Ad-hoc network between the two devices with no problems. However, whenever i tried to enter the network address into my browser USING FIREFOX I received a message saying that address was not valid (among other error messages). Finally I thought to use another browser (Safari) and it worked perfectly.
Might want to give that a try if you are having connection problems (with a standard OR ad-hoc network).

Thanks for adding this idea! As you mentioned it is worth to try using a different browser to establish the connection to the address provided.
