Photo Transfer now crashing constantly

Remarkable User 11 years ago updated 10 years ago 11
This app always worked perfectly - until the last update. Now it crashes each time I either attempt to connect (using the Windows 7 Photo Transfer App) or manually select images for transfer using the iPhone. I'm on iOS 5.0.1.

I wish I could roll back the version. It's completely unusable now. I've tried closing the process and rebooting the phone, but the problem remains.
Hello,

Thank you for sending us your inquiry here on the forum. I will be happy to assist you! I am sorry you are having issues with the app.

Is there anyway that you can update your iPhone to the latest iOS version? Our app should work with iOS 5.01. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app? Please give that a try and after reinstalling the app please launch your photos app first and then launch our app and attempt to transfer using our app.

Does it happen to crash only when you attempt to connect, or, when you create an album perchance? Are you given any error messages before it crashes? If so, what are they?

Best,

Amber

Thanks for responding to my post, Amber.

Photo Transfer was working well with iOS 5.0.1 until the most recent update.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the app and launching the Apple default Photos app before launching Photo Transfer. Unfortunately, the same problem occurs.

Here's what happens consistently:

1. I launch Photo Transfer on my iPhone
2. I select "Send Photos & Videos"
3. I select "Windows Computer" (though this error happens for all three options)
4. I press the "Start Here" arrow button
5. I select "Select Photos & Videos"
6. I select "Camera Roll"
7. I select "Last 100 photos"
8. I see "Loading" for a second and the app crashes

If I instead use your Adobe Air desktop app:

1. I launch Photo Transfer
2. I launch the desktop Adobe Air Photo Transfer app
3. I select my device name (my iPhone 4) using the desktop app
4. The iOS Photo Transfer app crashes

In all instances, Photo Transfer crashes when trying to browse the photos in an album. There are no error messages. The app just closes.

This is unfortunate, because the app was working perfectly until the latest update. I was starting to enjoy the convenience of the desktop app (which also worked well before the update).

Can your team review the changelog for v4.3 and see what updates may have affected album browsing in older iOS versions? You've said above that iOS 5.0.1 is supported, and I'd like to avoid upgrading to iOS 6 to address the bug.
Hello!

Thank you for your response :)

Can you please try to update your device to iOS5.1 at the very least? It would be best if you where running the latest iOS on your device but if you can't, can you please update it to iOS5.1? :)

Best,

Amber

Hi, forgive me for "butting in" but maybe there's a "Crash-Log" being generated on the iDevice, that can help the developer find your fault causing the crash.

Enrique, or Amber can tell you where to find it, and how to copy and paste it to here, or an eMail to their support address.

It's also possible you have Low Memory issues, or just some strange bug that was left-over from the older 5.0.1 iOS.

Amber is also correct that iOS 5.1 doesn't have this happen.
I'm using 5.1 and don't have the App crash when selecting photos, on my iPad2 16GB WiFi Only device, and my storage left is quite low as well.

Make sure you also have all other Apps shut, so the systems working memory will be as high as possible.
Amber can tell you how to do that too, if you've never used the Task-Bar window.

*** Amber - I'm not sure Apple allows updating to an iOS "between" version than the highest one available on their site. I may be wrong about this, as I've never had iOS 6 available when I went from iOS 5.0.1 to iOS 5.1
I appreciate this feedback.

I understand multitasking (and how to close apps) in iOS well. In all of my tests, Photo Transfer was the only app running.

I agree with your observation that Apple only allows upgrading to the most recent version of iOS. I don't believe it will be possible for me to upgrade to only iOS 5.1, and I'm not willing to update to iOS 6 just to get this one application working.

As for low storage space, I'm using a 32GB iPhone 4 with 18GB still available.

I can only surmise that changes were made to v4.3 that changed the way it accesses photo albums. I wish I could rollback the application, because I am no longer able to use it. If the update notes had at least stated that it broke support for iOS 5.0.1, I could have opted not to update.
Hello again, thanks for allowing my comments.

The only other hope is to get the crash-log from the Apple Settings App at the home screen.
Settings>General>About>Diagnostics & Usage , section
in hopes Enrique can see what's making it crash on your device.

Then tap the button actually saying "Diagnostics & Usage Data" when in that last area.

In that data window you'll see a list of files called .plist with the type of file it's from.

Example.... "Latest crash" -or- "Low Memory" or the App's name and there'll be a date of when the crash or .plist was made on that named list too.

Try to get all the latest .plist files, even if you must recreate the crash again to make newest ones show.

Within the .plist, after you tap one of them, you'll see text.
If you read down that text, a bit, it will mention the App and date it occurred on, just to verify it's the one you want, if no date shows in the title name of the .plist file.

Once you're sure it's the one(s) you want, press your finger over the text, and hold it on the screen for a second or so, ... Once one of the words highlights, release your finger, and a small menu will show saying two options, "Copy / Select All"

Choose "Select All" then after ALL the text highlights, you'll see one option, "Copy"

Tap this option, then go to your Note Pad App on the iDevice, and paste the text into a new page by doing the same finger press on that page after the keyboard shows. You just need to tap once, and an option will show called "Paste"

Use a new notepad page for each .plist file you save, so they don't get mixed up.

If you can do this for the two or three, or just one .plist that's generated for the crash, then you'll be able to copy those from the notepad to here, or an eMail to the support address for Enrique and his development team to view.

It's copied and pasted in the same way, from the notepad to here, or an eMail, using the iDevice, as you did from the .plist area.

If no .plist logs were generated, for this crash, then that's a problem. :(

If you have a sync'd backup of before you updated the App, I can tell you how to put your old version back using iTunes, and a simple "trick" :)
Thanks again. I've generated a crash log.

Can someone please let me know which support email address I should send it to?
I've seen this address mentioned by Amber and Enrique...

[ support [at] phototransferapp.com

Support@PhotoTransferApp.com
By the way... It's a good idea to also put a link to THIS post, in the text of the eMail, before the log, so they know where the log is from (subject) and why it was sent.
Thanks. I've sent the log.
Hello,

Thanks for your discussion. Here are some comments. We know that the app is having a problem on devices running iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1 - all other versions of iOS are not affected with this problem. We already fixed the issue but the update will come in a few days until iOS7 is released.

I would encourage you to update to iOS6 (or iOS7 in 1 week when Apple releases it) to continue getting new features. With every iOS update there are a lot of new features and developer APIs that make the apps better and that will not be compatible with earlier versions of iOS. In fact, it is very likely that a lot of developers update their apps soon with iOS7 ONLY versions as it is a major change on UI and a big development effort.

Thanks again for your discussion. I will update this thread once the next version of the app is available on the app store.

Best regards,

Enrique
