Cannot transfer large videos from iPad to PC

Sol 12 years ago updated 11 years ago 4
I am using an iPad 3 (ios 7) to send to Windows using the Windows/iOs app combo. My iPad is used as a editing repository from iPad, iPhone, Panasonic camera and Canon DSLR, if thats of any help.
Transfer works great, BUT for large videos, it just cannot transfer (ie 2+ mins of footage from iPhone). Other files are transferring, but when it gets to a large video, it cannot seems to progress. Having this issue right now with a MOV file.
The top progress bar on Windows app shows at 100%, but cannot go any further. This is a recurring issue I have found, and was also an issue in ios 6.

Is there a size limit of files? Is this a known bug? Is there an easy workaround?
Hello Sol,

Thank you for posting your question with us, I will be happy to assist you!

Transferring larger videos ( ie: 1 gig or higher ) can sometimes take a long time to transfer and, depending on your internet connection, might time out not enabling you to transfer it.

We recommend syncing larger videos with iTunes only because it might take a while to transfer and you might experience issues transferring such a large file over a wifi network.

Is there anyway that you can sync it with iTunes and see if it transfers over? Also are you have a specific problem with that particular video? One recommendation when you try again is to make sure that your iPad has enough storage (at least the 6GB) as our app needs to temporarily create a duplicate of the video to transfer it. Also, make sure that your iPad and PC are as close as possible to the wifi router to make sure that they get the best connection possible during the transfer.

Please let me know if this helps!

Best,

Amber

Hi Amber,
Thanks for the response. You will excuse me if I sound like I'm being rude, but what is behind the response is not really good enough (not your fault). What you seem to be saying is that the app is not capable of handling transfer of large files. Which makes it almost useless to me, as I use my iPad as an editing and organising platform and transfer custom albums at a time (which include pictures, larger and smaller videos). I bought this app to do a job and do it simply.

My ipad has plenty of space on it on this occasion, so thats not the problem. Even if it was, (coming from someone who has been in software Dev for 20 years), this should issue should be raised to the user in some way and handled.

In the past, I have used dropbox to transfer the files this app can't.

This is a bug. Please let me know if its likely to be fixed soon. If not, I will seek an alternative app.

Thanks,
Sol
Hi Sol,

Thanks for your comments. I'm sorry you are having issues with the app. This is Enrique, one of the developers of the app. Amber called my attention on this issue and I wanted to respond personally. We are looking into this issue, seems like our Windows app is giving up too fast when a network interruption occurs on long files. We are in the process of looking at the issue and implementing a fix for the next update. I apologize for the problem.

In the meantime, here is one thing to try to see if you get your video to transfer:

1) Open the app on your iPad and then touch 'Send' > 'Windows Computer' > 'Use web browser'.

2) Select the video that you want to transfer using the app on the iPad

3) Go to the web address provided by the app and try downloading the video directly from the web page. You can right click over the video thumbnail and click on 'Save target as..' so you can select where to save the video.

4) The transfer will start. You may not get feedback on the iPad but you can tell on your browser that the video will be downloading.

I hope this will help you while we figure out the large video transfer on the Windows app.

Let me know if you have other questions or comments.

Best regards,

Enrique
Photo Transfer App
Hi Enrique,
Thanks for getting back to me on this.
I am aware of the workaround of using http to transfer, which will transfer large files. With the inability of transferring video and images simultaneously, the task of having to individually download 33 videos last night was....well...frustrating.

For what its worth, the few things that would make this app awesome are:
1) Bug: Fixing the Windows app bug of not being able to transfer large videos
2) Feature: Being able to transfer more than 200 files at a time. Typically, I have 800 plus to transfer (and see (4) below)
3) Bug: Windows app does not remember the backup location. Aargh.
4) Bug/oversight: Do not just overwrite files that have a duplicate file name on download (Windows app). I have had situations when I have transferred 800 files to find only 780. Needle/ haystack.
5) Bug/ Setup issue: "Discover devices" on Windows app is flaky. Sometime it works, sometimes I have to reset the router.
6) Feature: Ability to delete photos from iDevice (iPad/iPhone). Apple seem to have missed this feature in ios7 in any useful way.

Putting this into perspective, I have had my moneys worth out of the app (its not exactly expensive), and it is one of only 3 apps that I have actually paid for.

Either way, I have found an alternative application that seems to do what I need from some initial test runs.

Best of luck, and thanks for the support so far.

Regards,
Sol
