Transfer video from iPad to iPhone

Jack van Vliet 14 years ago updated 13 years ago 19
I bought this app to transfer video from iPad to iPhone (to use in iMovie), but that doesn't seem to work. Any idea why not?
Hello Jack,

Thanks for posting your question here. For now we only support video transfer from iPhone to iPad or from iPhone to computer. Unfortunately Apple does not provide the programming interfaces to be able to read videos from the iPad.

We are waiting for Apple to release iOS4 for iPad (in November) to implement this feature on our application.

I'm sorry I didn't have better news. I will post something here as soon as we implement video transfers from iPad after the iOS4 for iPad rollout.

Let us know if you have any further questions or comments.

Kind regards,

Enrique
Photo Transfer App
I am using the latest iOS and latest version of your app and trying to transfer a video in my iPhone 4 library to my iPad however it says I have nothing selected. Is this because I am using Bluetooth? Does it only work on wifi?
Hi Alex,
Currently we only support transferring photos over bluetooth. To transfer videos from iPhone to iPad you need a wifi connection. This is because of the speed of transfer and the potential size of the videos.
Please let us know if you have any other question or comment.

Kind regards,
Enrique
Xfer videos app does the job! Maybe check it out?
I think you've falsely sold this app. It claims you can transfer photos or videos yet there is no video transfer from iPad to iPad. Total waste of my time, effort, and obviously... money.

Very unsatisfied.
Hello,

Thanks for posting your question here. Our app CAN definitely transfer videos from iPad to iPad. You need to have the app running on both devices and then use the 'Device' tab to transfer photos and videos selected.

If your video is longer than 5 minutes then please follow these instructions to increase the video duration limit: Open the 'Settings' app on the sending device and go to the settings for our app ('Transfer') . Then change the limit for the setting 'Max video duration' to 900 seconds (15 mins) or whatever you need. Please note however, that it may take quite a while to transfer if the video is very long and that your network may become slow during the transfer.

I hope this answers your question and I really hope our app will satisfy your needs. Please let me know if you have any other question or need more help getting your videos to transfer.

Kind regards,

Enrique
Photo Transfer App
May I also chime in to mention, loading the App to your other iDevices is FREE, if you use the same account the original purchase was made with.

So, you don't have to pay again for putting it to the other iPad.
Just enter your same account info to your other iDevices.

When you see how well it works, don't be shy, come back to say so. :-)
I won't be shy, nor shy to admit my mistake, but I think I'm either missing something or we're not talking about the same "videos." See I'm not talking about videos shot with my iPad. I'm talking about videos that are accessible with the "Videos" app. I'd like to be able to share those and as far as I can tell, your entire interface only accesses Albums in the Pictures space, not the videos that may reside on the device.

If I am mistaken, please let me know, and thank you for responding so promptly. If, however, you only transfer personal "videos" shot with the camera, your description is still deceptive.
Hi, may I say, I'm a customer, not working for this developer. :-)

I like the App enough to answer now and again.

If you're asking, will the App transfer videos you've downloaded from iTunes, no, it won't ... Apple restricts that function. But, if the video was a paid one, maybe you can download it on the other iDevice, free, if you use the same account it was paid with the first time.

Sorry I misunderstood your first question.

When Enrique returns later, he'll be able to say if a future update will support your requested function.

The App does transfer from computer to iDevice, and iDevice to iDevice, and iDevice to computer. Even videos NOT made with the iDevice, as long as they're converted to a file the iDevice supports.

I don't think the description on the Apps site ever mentioned transfers from the Videos section of the device. These videos are protected from that, by the iOS System.
It's not so much for videos downloaded from iTunes per se. I do pro video work myself and load .mp4 and h264 .movs on my iPad to carry with me. I'd like to be able to transfer those onto other people's iPads, without needing to put them on whatever computer they're syncing to. I don't expect to be able to copy paid-for iTunes video content.

But the description of "videos" should definitely be clarified somehow, because it is presently misleading.
At the present time, the App can move videos from iPad to iPad but from the photos section only. I'm also waiting for the update that may allow selection of folders, for transfer of videos and photos, to and from iDevices and PC's

Enrique said, the new iOS 5 update will allow more options for photo and video manipulation, and his App update will make use of it. You didn't make the wrong decision in your purchase of this App, the update will be wild.

Can I ask, how were you able to load the .mp4 .h264 and .mov files to your iPad now?

Was it by way of iTunes from your computer? Syncing the system?

If so, then I would think the new update to this App will support the transfer to another iPad, or other iDevice or PC.

I'm also looking to do the same thing, and decided to use this App for what it does now, because it was the ONLY one that worked well, so far, for what it does, so far. Believe me, you didn't waste your money.

Limitations in the iOS 4 restrict features with it at present. This App is the most stable of all of them so far, and the v3.0 update, using iOS 5, will do much more.
:-)
Well, I'm sure the app is fine for transferring photos, but it is currently terribly limited for transferring "videos." Enough that I would say the claims are misleading or deceptive.

I wanted to transfer videos from my iPad to my father's iPad today (for fathers day) so I not only paid for my copy but also gifted a copy of the app to him (as he has his own apple ID, so the "free" copy did not apply). So yes, I'd say for what I was attempting to accomplish today I did indeed waste my money, sorry.

I'd rather pay for the future version when it actually has the functionality I was needing it for. Sorry, but being better than the competition doesn't really matter much when it can't do something. It isn't failing any "better" than anyone else. ;)
I truly understand your frustration at present. Maybe the Apps description should make this clearer too, I'd have to look at it again, I never got that idea from it.

But, I'm still wondering how you put the videos on the iPad in the first place, being the present iPad iOS doesn't support it. I've tried too. And have complained to Apple about it as well.

Does using the iTunes syncing on the computer work for this? If so, I always thought iOS4 just supported non-professional video formats, converted to a special resolution size and video format.

Edit-
I did have another look at the App description, and yes I do agree with you, it's a bit vague on video transfer options, and from where videos are seen on the device, and what files types are supported. That's why impulse purchases are sometimes disappointing, if you had time, you could have asked first.

I really don't think Enrique wanted to mislead anyone, or was his intention to be deceptive, the product is mainly for photos, but the description could be made clearer regarding video files as well.

To Enrique- maybe updating the description is a good idea before updating the App.
Oh, sorry. Totally forgot to answer our question. Yes, you just drag your .mp4 or h264-encoded .mov videos to iTunes and then select them in the Movies tab and drag them onto the iPad (while connected) to sync. The iPad will playback 720p video fine. 1080p is currently too much for it, though apparently iOS 4 will enable 1080p video for the iPad 2.

I haven't really experimented with different video formats, since h264 is presently the best quality for the size, and the Apple video of choice (I mostly use AAC for the audio channels).

I carry my entire video portfolio with me this way; it's a wonderful way to demo video in meetings, etc. The videos look great on the iPad, and with the video adapter cable, you can also play out to TVs via HDMI.
Hi thanks for the info.
Do the transferred videos, when sync'd, wind up in the videos section of the iPad?

I tried this but couldn't get it to move anywhere on the iPad2.
Maybe my format wasn't the correct one...
I'll have to try converting to h264 .MOV files.
I'd really like to put my Canon HFs10 HD videos on my iPad2 , to show around.

Can you put them in the photos section too, or just videos section?
If you can sync them to the photos section folder as well, then the App can work for you to transfer to another iDevice.

I hope you have another chance to give your father the videos you had for him.
Also, I truly understand how the "moment has passed" and the excitement is gone, regarding the purchase :(
Hello gvidid1, rzanerutledge,

I'm sorry for my delayed response, I'm currently in European time zone so I just read your responses. Thanks for your very interesting discussion and insight.

I will definitely work on updating the app description so this becomes more clear, I apologize for this confusion. rzanerutledge, I'm sorry to hear you feel you wasted your money. Please email us at: support [at] phototransferapp [dot] com and we will find a way to compensate you.

The iPhone SDK currently provides 2 frameworks to access the photos and videos stored on your device. The first one is the ALAssetsLibrary which provides access to the photos stored on the 'Photos' app. This framework allows developers to read existing photos and videos as well as write new assets to the 'Photos' app (although in a very limited way). Photo Transfer App uses the ALAssetsLibrary to transfer photos and videos.

The second framework provided by the SDK is the Media Player Framework which "provides facilities for playing movie, music, audio podcast, and audio book files. This framework also gives your application access to the iPod library, letting you find and play audio-based media items synced from iTunes on the desktop. iPod library access is read-only.". Unfortunately the keyword on this paragraph is 'read-only'. So there is no way for developers to add new stuff to the Media library making a 'transfer' impossible.

One more difficulty regarding transferring videos (on top of the Apple's restrictions) is that sometimes those videos may be quite large and transferring them over wifi may take just too long. So, in general if you want to transfer long videos the best option is to use a cable instead of waiting for a long time to transfer over wifi. Furthermore, the 'Photos' app is probably not the best place to save very long videos or movies as it is not optimized for that.

Finally, I think not allowing write access to the Media Library is also part of Apple's strategy to encourage people to download podcasts/movies/music using the iTunes store and not from other channels.

I hope this explanation helps somehow. I apologize again for the confusion, send us an email and we will figure something out so you don't feel like you wasted your money.

Have a great beginning of the week!

Regards,

Enrique
Photo Transfer App
Hi there,

I wanted to get back to the orignial topic:
I bought this app beacause I wanted to edit movies on iMovie on my iPad2.
My videos come from different camcorders and I use a specific software on my PC to convert them into m4v format.

As iMovie only use videos from "photos" app, I use your app to transfert them over wifi into my camera roll.
It works juste fine.
But for some reason, none of the videos show up into iMovie.
Pictures work great, but there is no video in iMovie!!!

Do i make myself clear anought? (i'm not english...)

Thank you so much
Hello, I'm not an employee of this developer, so I can't be sure if my comment now, regarding their photo transfer App, is correct, but isn't your issue more with iMovie?

You said the videos were successfully transferred to the iPad2 but iMovie doesn't see them. Maybe iMovie isn't looking in the place you put them on the iPad2.

You can always re-sink them to a different area, using iTunes, if that's the case, but if the photo transfer App successfully transferred the videos, the App did what it was supposed to do.

Your issue is with iMovie.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood your original question.
Hello, gvdid1 for your answer,

Indeed, Transfert app did work well and the issue is probably with iMovie.
But maybe someone here have encountered the same problem.

Thanks,
