Does PT transfer RAW files?

olafwilloughby 14 years ago updated 11 years ago 28
Hi. Great app! One question. I shoot RAW + jpeg and transfer to my iPad via the camera connector. When I use Photo Transfer to upload from iPad to my Mac desktop it seems to transfer only the jpegs, not the RAWs. Am I doing something wrong? Or is there a workaround? Thx.
Hello,
Thanks for your question. Currently it is not possible for us to read the RAW version of the photo. Unfortunately the current version of the iPad SDK only allows developers to read the JPG version of the photo :(

The good news is that on the new iPhone SDK (4.0) we can read different representations of the photos which gives us hope that we will be able to do the same when the SDK 4.0 for iPad comes out. Apple mentioned on the last key note that will release the iPad SDK 4.0 at the end of the summer so hopefully we will only need to wait a few more weeks until they release it.

I will post something here as soon as we find if the new SDK will have a fix for this.

Let us know if you have any other question or comment.

Kind regards,

This answer was posted 5 months ago. Has the problem been fixed? I specifically bought this app to be able to transfer Raw files. If it doesn't do that, then I really don't need it.
Hi Ed,

Thanks for posting your comment. Apple released iOS4 for iPad just last month. Before that we didn't have access to the RAW representation of the photo. Now, in the new version of the app you can transfer the RAW files from your iPad to your computer, however, we have a small bug that is causing the images to be named with JPG extension even though they are already in RAW format after the transfer (this only applies to RAW images, not RAW+JPG).

So, you can try transferring the photos and after the transfer you can rename the files to RAW. Compare the sizes of the files. The RAW files should be arount 15MB.

We will push an update to fix the issue with the file names in January. Sorry we haven't been very fast with this but we've been quite busy the past couple of weeks.

Kind regards,

Enrique

So if you shoot Canon RAW+jpeg files, the software will only import jpegs? That was my experience with the app. But you're saying if we shoot in RAW-only mode, they will transfer to the iPad without optimization & full-size files as originally captured? Simply rename files as "RAW" upon import to hard drive? I'll try it, will post results, please confirm.
That's correct Cris. If you shoot RAW-only then the app should transfer the RAW files. If they are JPG+RAW then they will be transferred as JPG only.

We hope to have an update in January to be able to select the format that you want to transfer.

Happy holidays!
Can I download full high res photos to my iPad and later download the same FULL HIGH RES photo to my computer using your app.?
Anything new on transfer of full high res photos?
Hi Larry,
Unfortunately that is not possible right now. When we save the photos to the iPad they are 'optimized' by the Photos app to be displayed on the iPad's screen and during this process the photos may loose their original resolution if they were taken with a high res. camera.

The good news is that this may be fixed by Apple soon on the upcoming iOS4 for iPad. On iOS4 for iPhone there are some programming interfaces that can help with this problem so we are just hoping that the same interfaces are ported to iPad when the new OS comes out.

I hope this answers your question. Let us know if you have any other question or comment.

Anything new on the ability save and transfer high res photos?
Hi Larry,

Sorry for not responding earlier. Apple released iOS4 for iPad last November.

Basically, you can now transfer RAW files from iPad to computer but not RAW+JPG files yet.

We are back in the office now and we will try to fix the bug with the RAW only files and add support for RAW+JPG as fast as possible. Let us know if you have any comments: support [at] phototransferapp [dot] com

Happy new year! Kind regards,

Enrique

Do you have any idea when you might offer an upgrade that will transfer RAWs in "bulk?"

Also, I was wondering if you could clarify the statement about Apple optimizing high res photos. and possibly "downgrading them." I assume you are talking about jpegs? Ouch, is that still true?
Hi Donna,

See my new answer below. I hope our app will be useful to you. Please let us know if you have any further question.

Hello everyone,

This is good news. Yesterday we submitted an update to Photo Transfer App that includes the ability to transfer photos in RAW format from iPad to computer. Please update the app on your device and give it a try to this new functionality. You can update the app by using the 'App store' app on your iPad.

Sorry it took us sometime to release it this feature. We hope you will find it useful. By the way, we recommend to transfer photos in batches of 10 or 15 given the file size of RAW files. You can transfer in bigger batches but be aware that it will take a few minutes to complete the transfer. The photos are transferred at full resolution (RAW and JPG) there is no change on the resolution made by our app.

Let us know if you find any problem. We look forward to your feedback.

Kind regards,

Enrique

Hello, since friday i use an ipad 2 and i'am very happy that your app allows the transfer of my nikon raw files (.nef) from my ipad to my mac. Unfortunately, the files doesn't show the original name, it seems that they have been renamed by photo transfer. Is is possible to get the original name by import?

Kind regards
Norbert Luek
Hi Norbert,

Thanks for posting your comment here. Unfortunately the current version of the iPad SDK does not provide a way for us to know the original name of your photos. The iPad assigns a new name to your photos when they are saved to the device according to an internal naming system which we can't control :(

There is already a feature request that was submitted to Apple to change this for the next version of the iPad SDK so we hope Apple will listen to it and make the necessary changes for the next iPad OS.

Sorry I didn't have better news. Let us know if you have any other questions or comments.

Kind regards,

Enrique

Hi Enrique Many thanks for your Quick answer from Germany.
Norbert
I bought this app to transfer high-res RAW files from a Leica S2. When I select photos then download them as a zip file (DNG) the files have a DNG extension after downloading to the computer but are about 1/3 the size of a typical DNG file from the camera. In fact, they seem like JPGs that just have a DNG extension. If I click a single file to download from the browser interface I get a full DNG. This seems like a bug with the batch zip download of DNGs.
Thanks for posting your problem here. The zip download should tak the full resolution RAW file and not the JPG version. We tried with a few formats but not with the DNG format. Would it be possible for you to send us some samples of your DNG files for us to test? It would be great to have the same DNG file downloaded as a zip file and as a separate file using the 'Full resolution' link on the transfer web page. If you can please send us your sample files to our support email: support [at] phototransferapp [dot] com

Sorry about this issue. I hope you can help us figuring this out. Thanks!!

Hello, I have a Nikon camera and my raw files have the extension nef. They import with the iPad but I'd like to upload them via FTP. I've tried other products that don't work.

Can this app upload both Jpeg and raw to FTP without any manipulation on the files? No resizing or anything. I'd like to know before hand. I've already spent 15$ on FTP clients that don't work. Thank you
Also, I dont care about FTP to iPad, just iPad to FTP. Ipad2 iOS 5 if that helps.
Hello Alex!

Thanks for your question. Our app can transfer RAW files/photos from iPad to computer via http (Through a webpage). Our app can also read any format but unfortunately we don't support FTP.

Please note that our app does allow you to transfer RAW files from iPad to Computer but it does not support transferring RAW files from computer to iPad.

I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can answer any more of your questions! Thanks and have a great day!

Warm Regards,

I'm using the ipad as a stepping stone to get images off the camera and onto a server so getting images off of a computer and onto my ipad is unnecessary :P

That said, if you don't support ftp, do you support batch uploading? If I put 100 images onto my ipad, can I select all 100 and send them off somewhere? If that's the case and you support HTTP, I'm guessing I could whip up a quick webapp to take in the upload and deal with the images in anyway I see fit?

Thank you for your answers...
Hi Alex,

Yes, you can select multiple photos and then download the photos to your computer using a web browser. Selecting 100 RAW files should work but it may take sometime to transfer since RAW files are usually quite big in size.

After you select the photos on the device you need to go to the http address provided by the app to download the photos to the computer.

Hope this helps!

What about transfering raw photos from computer to iPad?
Hi Mike,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately for now we don't support transferring RAW files from computer to iPad. We are working on enabling that feature for our next software update.

One thing you may want to try (although is a bit of a 'hack') is to rename your RAW files to .JPG (if you just have a few files to transfer) and then you can try to transfer them using our app. I would recommend you to try this with just 1 file to see if it works and then if it does you can upload a few more if you need to.

I will update this thread as soon as the app update is available with this feature.

Let us know if you have any other question or comment, we appreciate your feedback.

Kind regards,

Enrique

Can you transfer RAWs TO the iPad? Currently the only way I can get in the rw2 I want is to email it.

I have been able to get it onto the iPad using Air Sharing or with some other methods, but then I can't get it into the iPad's saved photos, which means that I can't access it with the apps I want to use. They also won't import via the card reader, and through Aperture only the jpg makes it. So I want something that can send a RAW into the iPad and into the saved photos.
I transfered raw+jpeg files from my camera to ipad using camera connection kit.
I try to backup these files on my macbook using your app but only the jpeg files are transferred. raw files are lost ?!
i dont find a way to backup raw files, reading this discussion it should work.

inof: my camera is a panasonic and raw files have the .rw2 extension.

Thx for advices, however your app is great

fabrice
Hi Fabrice,

Sorry for not responding earlier. Yes, our app will transfer your RAW files, unfortunately when they are in RAW+JPG they will transfer in JPG only when using the desktop app. If you want to get the RAW files then you need to use the web interface which will offer you a choice between the RAW or JPG files. To do this follow the instructions on the app to open the web interface and then select the files that you want to download. Next you can download them in a zip file as RAW or JPG.

I hope this helps you!

Best,

Enrique
